I was thinking the whole day about why it is, exactly, that I'm participating in the Day of Silence. This is what I came up with:
I can speak. I can be out and visible as a bisexual woman.
Even if I were straight, I could speak out about my views on non-straightness. I do not have to fear harrassment or bodily harm based on my sexual orientation (real or perceived) or views on queer rights and issues.
When I am silent, it is more noticeable that I don't have to be.
This draws attention to the problem that too many (though 1 is too many) cannot call out for help, though they (sometimes desperately) need it. Their voices are silenced.
I choose silence to draw attention to those who have no choice.
